Sustainable Energy – without the hot air

Completed the recommended reading for a course.  The book is great as it answered a lot of the questions I’ve always pondered.  It’s free too! Looking at some of the graphs from the book, I realized that I’m now living more sustainably in HK compared to Canada. This is an unintended good thing. It kind […]

Busy January

January was the busiest month since I returned to HK.  On top of school and an extra AutoCAD course on the side, I took up my first freelance project.  I don’t really mind being busy, for it keeps me productive, but whether it’s meaningful is another question. Hopefully, I’ll have more time in February to […]

Moving On From….. the Copenhagen UN Climate Summit

It was freezing cold at the BYOB forum on Sat. evening, I was shivering while listening to the panels discuss issues about climate change.  What stirred me most was the way one of the panels reacted to a question from the floor.  I can sense his passion and love of nature.  Yes, how can we […]

Changchun Library Design

I’ve missed Sunday service, skipped my first class (it’s actually an optional workshop), missed my regular Sunday dim-sum with my family, and failed to attend a wedding I was initially thinking about going.  I’ve even refrained from playing with my adorable little nephew when he came knocking every morning throughout last week. I can be […]

Bioclimatic Building Design

It was a bit of a relief after the last lecture of the Bioclimatic Building Design course yesterday.  At the same time, I was actually a bit saddened to see our professor go.  It was only 2 weeks ago when he came from New Zealand to teach us.  At first, I found him to be […]

Work & Play

It was a week of work & play.  I’ve spent much of my days this week to do the pre-course reading for my upcoming course. But life would be too dry if it’s all work and no play, so I’ve spent 4 of the 5 weeknights playing badminton/basketball. “Work hard, play hard!”

Daylighting and Lighting Design

For my assignment on the lighting design course, I’ve spent a working week at my brother’s office to observe how people use lighting (both natural and electrical).  I feel that natural daylight is often under-utilized.  In the open office, fifteen 36W florescent tubes were used to provide ~300-400 lux illumination on the eight desks.  In […]

Autumnal Equinox

I just realized today that I had missed the Autumnal Equinox – an important moment that signifies the start of Autumn for people living in the Northern Hemisphere.  It was actually just a couple of weeks ago that we were briefly taught on the topic of solar geometry. No wonder I didn’t feel too hot […]

CUHK Campus

It was cloudy and wasn’t too hot today.  There were about 5 hours in between 2 workshop safety sessions, so I took a leisurely stroll around the campus.  The walk was quite refreshing, I really like the extensive greenery all over the campus.

Window

We were taught on some of the basic principles in designing windows to utilize natural skylight.  With ever increasing density and height of buildings, it’s becoming ever more rare to have a window inside a building that can see the sky in HK.   I feel very thankful to have this un-obstructive view of the […]
