Claude Monet Exhibition

Finally decided to see the Claude Monet exhibition this afternoon.  It’s my first time seeing an exhibition of an impressionist artist, not to mention one of the pioneers of the field.

I didn’t seem to be too impressed with the impressionist paintings, but I was really captivated by the life of the artist.  According to the descriptions, Claude Monet was a family man, a good husband, a good father, and a good friend.  He led a simple life spending much of his time painting and gardening when he was not with his family and friends.

I kinda envy the artist’s secluded lifestyle.  Maybe because living in the city is too hectic and noisy that it seemed like a dream come true to be spending my days in a solitude garden (with a hugh lily pond) and doing nothing other than painting, eating, and sleeping.  If only I could replicate that lifestyle in HK, could I?

A Week of Fiery News

The major local news headline this week was about an industrial building not far from my studio that caught fire.  Battling the fire was extremely difficult because the building was used as a mini storage facility that seemed to the firefighters like a maze cluttered with uncountable boxes of unknown personal objects.  The fire burned a record 108 hours with 2 firemen died and 10+ more injured.  Pray that God would comfort the families of the 2 firemen sacrificed and heal those who were injured. ??

The growing popularity of mini storage facilities is a reflection of our materialism, we simply own much more stuff than we have the space for.  I witnessed this trend many years ago, when I was living in Toronto (where there’s no shortage of land like HK), I would see many warehouses along the highway being transformed into storage facilities.  It was popular because many people were starting to move from big houses to smaller apartments or townhouses and needed extra space to store their stuff.

When will we humans understand that our materialistic lifestyle is not sustainable?  When will we understand that our life on earth is only temporary and that accumulating “treasures” here is meaningless?
